Why Above Average (And Why This Is for You)

Hi, I'm Pablo.
4 weeks ago I ran my 19th marathon.
At 44.
With 2 young kids.
Working full-time.
Not to break records.
So my kids one day know that "I don't have time" is a decision, not a destiny.
Welcome to Above Average.
Every week I share:
- 1 statistic that exposes average mediocrity
- 1 system I use to overcome it
- 1 specific action you can implement today
No cheap motivation.
No theory that doesn't work.
Just tested systems.
THE LESSON: WHY THIS EXISTS
I'm 40+.
Max is 4. Mía is almost 2.
One day they're going to ask me (if I'm still alive):
"How did you do it, Dad?"
How did you run 19 (or more, God willing) marathons while working full-time?
How did you grow to lead and be recognized by global tech teams while we were small?
How did you start from zero in a new country at 30+?
This newsletter is my answer to those questions and more.
Not for them now.
For them when they're 20, 30, 40 years old.
When they face their own battles.
When life tells them "you don't have time."
When average invites them to settle and be mediocre.
Because every day that passes it's easier to be part of the crowd.
I want them to read this and know:
Your dad wasn't special. Your dad had systems.
And so can you.
THE STATISTIC: AVERAGE MEDIOCRITY
Average isn't "bad people."
It's the default route when you don't actively choose something else — when you operate on autopilot.
Look at these statistics:
- 70% are overweight.
- Only 0.5% have run a marathon.
- 43% don't read a single book per year.
- The average person watches 4+ hours of TV.
- Only 1% of marathoners run sub-3:30.
Me:
- 6 weekly training sessions.
- 19 marathons completed (last one: 3h14') — top 10% in my age group.
- 20+ books per year.
- No TV.
(I'm not a genius. I have systems.)
ABOVE AVERAGE IS NOT PERFECTION
AVERAGE → ME
"I don't have time" → I train at 5am (before anyone wakes up)
"I need motivation" → My system runs without it
"I'll do it someday" → I started imperfect and improved along the way
"I can't change" → I've changed country, career, and life 3 times
WHAT YOU'LL FIND HERE
Every week I'll dismantle one average statistic.
I'll show you the exact system.
Bonus: How I measure it, why it works, what failed before.
Examples of first weeks:
- WEEK 1: "The average person doesn't run"
- WEEK 2: "The average person says they don't have time"
- WEEK 3: "The average person looks for balance"
No $997 courses here.
No coaches or gurus who don't practice what they preach.
No motivation that disappears by Monday.
Just systems.
The same ones I use.
So my kids can one day use them too.
THE ACTION (for today)
Choose ONE average statistic that bothers you.
It could be:
- "The average person doesn't read"
- "The average person is overweight"
- "The average person works without strategy"
Now ask yourself:
"What decision can I eliminate so I'm not average in this?"
Examples:
You want to read more:
- Book on the nightstand (not on the shelf)
- 10 pages before touching your phone
You want to train:
- Workout clothes next to the bed (ready the night before)
- Alarm far from reach
- Out the door without overthinking
You want to work better:
- 3 priorities at the start of the day (not inbox)
- Deep work before meetings
- Say NO to everything else
Average improvises. Above Average has systems.
